Baywind Aussies is located in Walnut Creek, in the Bay Area of Northern California. We are a registered kennel with the Australian Shepherd Club of America (ASCA). We are also members of the Northern California Australian Shepherd Club, United States Australian Shepherd Association and Mt. Diablo Dog Training Club.
While I was growing up, my family raised Golden Retrievers. After graduating college, I bought a beautiful male black Lab whom I named Thunder. Because he was a very active dog, I realized a happy dog is a trained dog and started obedience classes with Mt. Diablo Dog Training Club. Two years later, I bought another black Lab, and named him “Lightning”. I trained both Labs to AKC CD’s.
When I met Alan, Thunder had recently died and Lightning was my only dog. Alan bought me a female yellow Lab puppy for a birthday present. Sandy was from field trial lines and was like an Aussie in a yellow fur coat. She had more energy than both the male Labs put together. So, again we were off to obedience school!!!!
This time I was lucky to have the opportunity to train with nationally acclaimed obedience instructor Judie Howard of Arydith Obedience School. Judie has written a book on obedience training titled “From the Dog’s Point of View”. She has a very “special” talent for training dogs, and teaches people to train their dogs using positive reinforcement. The following year, Alan and I brought Thunder #2 home. I eventually became one of Judie’s assistant trainers and had the opportunity to train with her for 6 years until she retired from teaching group classes in 1995. With Judie's expertise and guidance, Thunder became my first dog to achieve the acclaimed “Dog World Award”.
As both of the Labs were getting very old, Sandy was 14 & Thunder was 13, it was time to start thinking about getting a puppy. We looked at Labs, Goldens, Corgis and Aussies. Since we had shown Quarter Horses for many years, we had seen many Aussies and Corgis at the shows and were always impressed with them. We decided to go to the Golden Gate dog show in San Francisco. At this show, the dogs are benched and spectators can talk to the breeders about their dogs. After much research we knew the Aussie was going to be our next dog.
We bought our first Aussie, Windfalls Chance in Hell, aka Chance from Patty and Jim Wirries of Windfall Australian Shepherds in 2002. Chance was purchased as a pet/performance puppy on a spay/neuter contract. So off we went to Obedience class again!
Chance was like no other dog we had ever trained before! He was amazing, so easy to train, so intelligent, loving and devoted to us. A year later we wanted to get another puppy, so we again contacted Jim and Patty. They offered us 10 month old Windfalls Major Babe, aka Major, and we agreed we would show this multi talented boy in conformation, obedience as well as other venues. Alan fell in love with Major at first sight and he is definitely Alan’s boy!
In 2006, we welcomed Chance’s mom Windfalls At Long Last “Lexi” to our house for her forever home and a bitch puppy from Lexi’s last litter, Windfalls Be Dazzled “Dizzy”.
In 2008, Dizzy and Major presented us with the first Baywind litter; 8 beautiful puppies which we call the "Major Babes". We kept a blue merle puppy bitch named Baywinds Major Attraction "Mattie " and we also co-own a beautiful blue merle male named Baywinds Major Leaguer "Catch" with a very dear friend Faith Baker. You guessed it, we are back to obedience classes again!
We are absolutely hooked on Aussies!
